Postdoctoral Research Fellowships
There
are currently no funded positions available in the centre. We are always
interested in hearing from appropriately qualified people who have
their own funding. However, we are expecting to have a fully funded
opening later this year (end of summer). Feel free to contact us here.

PhD Studentships
We have a fully-funded 3 year studentship from the Royal Society, available to start immediately on:
A new approach to inelastic electron scattering
A key goal of
condensed matter physics is to develop a thorough understanding of the
microscopic properties of materials to enable the rational design of
new compounds with desired characteristics. A major challenge, however,
is that their particles often do not act independently, but
collectively. In this project, you will initially develop a
state-of-the-art instrument to probe the inelastic scattering of
low-energy electrons, creating new opportunities for studying
dispersions and lifetimes of collective excitations in materials with
unprecedented resolution. You will apply this to investigate exotic
metals known to exist at the surface of a special type of insulator
called a topological insulator, providing new insights on their
collective excitation spectra and many-body interactions.
You should have, or
be about to obtain, a degree in physics, with a strong background in
condensed matter physics. Applications should be made through the
School of Physics and Astronomy online system. You should be
enthusiastic and hard working, and may ideally have some experience
with ultra-high vacuum technology, electron spectroscopy, electronics,
or surface science. For more information, contact philip.king@st-andrews.ac.uk.
