Magnetic Susceptibility Calibration Constant

Standard HgCo(CNS)4 is provided in the sealed tube (blue solid).  Note the following then insert into the equation to find the calibration constant K.

Mass, m is given on the container.

You must measure l (length of sample, in cm) and R.

Gram susceptibility in c.g.s. units:

106 χg  =

4981

283 + T

(Celsius)

(Yes it is 283, not 273. This is not a temperature correction, each standard has its own constant here and for HgCo(SCN)4 it's 283.)

χg  =  16.44 × 10-6 c.g.s. at 20°C

R0  =  -32

K  =

χg × m × 109

l × ( R - R0 )
